Scotch Whisky Masters success for SMWS
With more than double the entries this year than last, competition for the Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Master was more intense than ever – making the Society’s haul of one Master medal and five Golds from our six entries a fantastic achievement.
This year’s Scotch Whisky Masters competition saw 169 entries from 45 different companies, making it the biggest and most competitive in the event’s history.
The coveted title of Master was awarded to the Society bottling Cask No. 53.322: Carpe diem, a 30-year-old Vaults Collection bottling from a refill sherry butt.
Gold medals went to Cask Nos. 10.191: Oh So Sumptuous, 6.39: A Belter Of A Dram!, 112.53: Sophisticated Seductive Sazerac Cocktail, 26.138: Aubergine Taco and G10.21: Surfing a custard wave.
“To receive any sort of medal is something that every company should be extremely pleased with. However, for The Scotch Malt Whisky Society to receive a Master medal and give Golds from their six entries and from within a very competitive Masters competition is a truly fantastic achievement,” said Richard Cochrane from the Spirits Business. “Massive congratulations!”
“We’re delighted to be recognised with these awards,” said SMWS spirits director Kai Ivalo. “Apart from anything else, they showcase the astonishing variety we offer our members, from our relatively youthful Gold-medal 7-year-old Speysider 6.39: A Belter of a Dram! through to the epitome of our Vaults Collection bottling and Master winner 53.322: Carpe Diem.
“We left our single grain Gold medal winner G10.21: Surfing a custard wave to mature for all of its 41 years in a second fill ex-bourbon cask, but opted to transfer the whisky in 112.53: Sophisticated Seductive Sazerac Cocktail after 13 years in ex-bourbon to a first fill Limousin oak hogshead. Both of these obviously wowed the judges and our members too, and are testament to both the Spirits Teams skill and decision making, as well as the Tasting Panel’s finely-tuned noses.”
