DESCRIPTION:We’ve had so many new and different tasting events this year\, and we’re already more than half way through winter!  So\, whilst the weather is still cold and the drams taste that much better\, we felt we should round off the season with a Winter Whisky Tasting.  With the emphasis on tasting… \nWe’ll be showcasing a deliberate range of whiskies for this event:  Some off the new August Outturn; maybe some sneak peeks of what will appear on the September Outturn; and also a few special whiskies we have in such small quantities that they’re unlikely to ever be featured on an Outturn!  It will be an eclectic\, yet extremely delicious line up.  A more “social” tasting rather than a tutored masterclass\, we’ll simply showcase a great range of Society drams and let the whiskies do the talking.  (Don’t worry – we’ll announce each whisky and share the full story and details about each distillery and the cask).  This is definitely an event to bring your friends to if you’ve always wanted to share the joys of SMWS whisky. \nAs always\, a light supper will be served.  6.30pm (welcome dram) for a 7.00pm start. DESCRIPTION:For some of our long-term members\, if you cast your memory back to 2015\, we had our incredible peated night of delicious goodies\, and we’re back in 2017 with a vengeance! \nThis is the return of our Peat Bar\, at a whole new venue for you to buy and savour drams by the dram in a warm and social atmosphere. \nWhat you need to know: \n1. There are at LEAST 10 Society single cask single malt peated whiskies on taste and for sale by the dram.\n2. Dram prices will range from $15-$60 per 30ml dram (note that most of our events feature whisky at 15ml tastes).\n3. The booking fee is only $30. This includes light supper/finger food and your welcome dram.\n4. There will be a regular bar of beers available on the night.\n5. A casual evening of good peat\, good social times.\n6. The peated whiskies will be available per/dram on the night which you’ll be able to use either cash or credit card to purchase (tap & go).\n7. A new venue for us at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music ‘Music Cafe’ – across the road essentially from the Royal Automobile Club.\n8. DESCRIPTION:The Viking from Orkney\, the man with Highland Park literally tattooed on his chest\, is presenting ONE special evening with the Society: Tuesday 3rd October in Melbourne. \nHighland Park for me is one of those truly remarkable distilleries that was absolutely a ‘gateway’ single malt in my formative whisky years of discovering great spirit. In 2004\, Michael Jackson\, the whisky writer\, not the self-styled King of Pop\, declared it to be ‘the greatest all-rounder’ among single malts\, a comment that I wholeheartedly agree with. \nAs any members of the SMWS who have been to one of our renowned distillery-focus evenings can attest to\, there’s something truly magical about our distillery-focus nights\, being able to share a dram in a welcoming space with someone directly involved in the day-to-day of the distillery. For our Highland Park focus\, we’d like to invite you to share a few special drams with Martin Markvardsen\, the Senior Brand Ambassador direct from the distillery\, to explore the new core range\, a preview taste of a new special release\, and then two yet-to-be-released casks from this distillery from the Society. DESCRIPTION:Over the last 10 years\, we’ve held some serious whisky matching events.  We’ve paired and matched our Society whiskies to chocolate\, beer\, cheese\, coffee\, and – of course – the cooking and dishes of some Australia’s best and most recognised chefs. \nWhisky is made from cereal grain\, and there’s another staple product that shares a common heritage:  Bread!   So what happens when you match single malt whisky with single origin grain bread?   It’s time to find out! \nJoin us for an incredible culinary evening as we match and pair a diverse range of Society whiskies with the exceptional single origin flour breads of Brasserie Bread. Brasserie Bread is arguably Australia’s best artisan baker\, supplying top quality and award-winning breads to the top restaurants\, cafes\, and outlets of Sydney\, Melbourne and Brisbane.   They are one of the few bakers to make bread using only single origin wheat that can be traced back to the source.   (Most commercial flours are milled and blended for consistency).   Their premises at Banksmeadow also runs and holds brilliant baking classes and a sensational café.    We’ll be supplying their bakers with a number of our whiskies (including a grain whisky and a peated whisky) and let them work their magic as they create and pair breads for the perfect match. \nIn addition to enjoying the delicious breads\, a supper will be provided on the night\, and all attendees will also take home a little goodie bag with a special artisan loaf inside to enjoy the next day! \nPlease note the evening is being held at the bakery at Banksmeadow and public transport options are limited.  We’ve pushed the arrival time back by 15 minutes\, but please allow sufficient time for your travels.  Taxi or Uber might be your best bet\, or take the 309 or X09 bus from Central Station. 6.45pm arrival for a 7.15pm start. \nThis event is strictly limited to just 35 people\, so book in quickly to avoid disappointment.   I look forward to breaking bread with you on the night! \nSlainte\, \nAndrew Derbidge\nCellarmaster & NSW Manager \n

DESCRIPTION:**Please note – this event has been rescheduled from April 9th to May 9th**\nAfter too long between meals\, we’re back on the menu with what might be our most incredible and exciting Society dinner yet! Unlike any SMWS whisky dinner before it\, this dinner will be a Scotch Malt Whisky Society “French Affair”\, featuring some of the finest French spirits you’re likely to encounter in a single sitting. \nYou’ll be aware that the Society has been busy bottling single casks of cask-strength Cognac and Armagnac for some time. What you would not have been aware of is that we’ve been carefully stashing aside some bottles of each spectacular release for this very event! Our dinner will feature a five course meal\, with each course specifically matched by the chef to the following exceptional Society spirits: \nC1 – “Nectar Celeste” from Ile de Re; released by the Society in 2016 at a Members’ price of $349 and long since sold out.\nC2.1 – “Exquisitely polished” from Domaine de Chez Guerive\, Petit Champagne; released by the Society in 2017 at a Members’ price of $230.\nC3.1 – “A fragrant ramble” from Domaine du Menis\, Grande Champagne; one of the rarest and oldest single casks of Cognac on earth\, released by the Society in 2018 at a Members’ price of $695.\nC4.1 – “A tantalising tightrope” from Distillery d’Aumagne\, Fins Bois; released by the Society in 2017 at a Members’ price of $270.\nA3.1 – “Gravitas and Sophistication” – a 30yo Armagnac not yet released by the Society in Australia\, with a Members’ price of $395. \nThese five incredible French spirits are rare and special enough\, although the more observant amongst you may also have noticed that they’re all “dot ones” – that is\, the first Society cask bottled from each respective distillery! The mere chance to taste C3.1 alone makes this event a “not to be missed” evening. \nOur dinner will be held at Brasserie l’Entrecote – a new and exciting French restaurant on Sydney’s north shore that has already been turning heads and garnering high accolades. Your ticket price includes a welcome dram on arrival; the incredible five course dinner with matching French spirits; and all service costs. Diners are also welcome to purchase additional wine/beer/soft drinks from the restaurant on a consumption basis.
