DESCRIPTION:Franz Scheurer\, the internationally-acclaimed maestro of matching food to whisky\, returns for yet another SMWS Whisky Dinner\, this time teaming up with none other than Lennox Hastie of both Firedoor and Gildas fame (as well as the Netflix series\, Chef’s Table).\nGildas\, Lennox’s second restaurant in Sydney\, opened in 2022 and earned a Chef’s Hat in its first year. Basque-inspired cuisine from his time in Spain\, it was awarded Two Hats for 2026. Franz and Lennox — two mates in the kitchen from way back — have worked to put a sensational menu together\, combining Lennox’s exceptional cooking\, Franz’s knack for the match\, and curation of our full-flavoured Society whiskies. \nSome members will be familiar with the remarkable flavour pairings that await as they are true pairings\, adopting Franz’s 1+1=3 principle. DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it’s back! Our favourite and most popular tasting event is back for 2025. And\, this year\, we’re combining it with our annual Gathering!\nThe SMWS Gathering has always been a time of coming together\, a time to embrace the shared love and passion for good whisky amongst friends new and old. It’s a celebration of everything that makes the SMWS truly unique: the whisky\, stories\, experiences\, and most importantly\, the members! \nSo\, how does our “Guess the Whisky” night work\, and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing five of our latest whiskies — some of the latest Outturn\, and some that have never before been seen or released in Australia! As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and — with the benefit of multiple choice\, answer sheets\, and the tasting notes to help you — your team attempts to guess each whisky’s key features and characteristics. \nFor example\, its age\, its ABV (both within ranges — don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its Flavour Profile\, its region\, and — for bonus points — the actual cask code! Each whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. \nIt’s a bit like your local pub trivia night\, only tastier! \nIt’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and — best of all — you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way. And it will also be your best chance to try our Australian-exclusive Gathering cask\, which this year was handpicked by our Marketing Manager\, Adam Ioannidis\, before it’s released online on the 17th. Join us for an incredible evening as we undertake a virtual tour of Speyside: We’ll float downstream on the River Spey\, checking out the scenery\, the people\, the villages\, the attractions\, the accommodation\, the activities\, and — of course — the distilleries along the way. \nIn fact\, we’ll taste no less than seven Speyside malts\, with an accompanying light supper\, as we explore the area in detail. Now 10 years on\, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary\, we’re inviting our members around the world to come together for our BIGGEST party yet. \n— \nThe Gathering returns to Sydney this September\, but it’s not just the Gathering that’s returning. After an absence of five years\, an old favourite returns: Guess the Whisky!  \nGuess the Whisky was a regular Society event on the Sydney calendar\, held every year or two from 2007 to 2018. So how does it work and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing six of our Gathering whiskies\, but we’ll serve them blind without revealing their order or the cask in question. As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and — with the benefit of multiple choice\, answer sheets\, and our tasting notes to help you — your team attempts to guess each whisky’s key features and characteristics. For example\, you’ll nominate its age and its ABV (both within ranges — don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its region\, and — for bonus points — the actual cask. \nEach whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. It’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and —best of all — you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way.
