We are pleased to announce the appointment of our newest SMWS Ambassador to South Australia — Nirmal Menon, an Adelaide-based member who is passionate about good flavours, and delivery prime experiences to members.
Nirmal joined the SMWS in 2014 after visiting the Members’ Rooms in London; it was his first proper introduction to what the Society was all about, and his first real exposure to cask strength whisky and its range of flavour profiles. Whilst initially staying for the whisky, over time it became more about the people. Some of Nirmal’s closest friendships have come through the Society, including virtual catch-ups during Melbourne’s lockdowns where they would share drams around a theme, compare notes, and banter their way through the night.
Nirmal has spent time in both the Adelaide and Melbourne chapters, which has given him a clear view of what works.
“Melbourne’s consistent event schedule, varied venues, and interesting themes created strong engagement. Adelaide has a solid core of members, and with more younger members coming through, there’s a clear opportunity to build something more active again,” Nirmal states.
“I’ve stepped into the SA Ambassador role for a simple reason: more events, more often. The demand is there; now it’s about giving members more opportunities to catch up and share a few great drams.”
“At the end of the day, it’s still just whisky; but it’s a very good reason to get people together.”
Many of you may have seen Nirmal around at events both in Melbourne and Adelaide (and even Champs in Sydney/Melbourne over the years), and can see him at his first event supporting Andrew Derbidge during his Grand Tour of Scotland event.
