48.161 Relax and have a cuppa

Something quite light from this Distillery and a standout during our June virtual tasting — Cask 48.161 is herbal with some cinnamon sweetness. One of the all-agreed- on local tasting notes was that it was like eating hot chips with chicken salt on them in an indoor pool where the smell of chlorine fills the environment, a bit of a staple Aussie experience. There is a very limited number of these bottlings available this month, with only 24 having arrived in Australia, so don’t sleep on your chance to grab yourself something a bit different this month.

Tasting Panel notes

We imagined walking into a building site where workers were stripping walls, dust everywhere, but then emerged on the other side into a garden full of Mediterranean plants, lavender, rosemary, mint and chive, as well as bay and olive trees. To taste, we enjoyed an entertaining mixture of Indian chicken jalfrezi (a spicy dish with tomato sauce, garam masala and chunky onions and peppers) and grilled teriyaki chicken skewers. Following reduction we cooked, using all these herbs, a lamb cutlet with roasted vegetables. On the palate we figuratively heard the crackle of the gunpowder tea leaves when brewed as we sat back and relaxed with a cuppa.
