March Outturn is this Friday, and we’re really starting to ramp up for the cooler months with some fascinating casks on offer. Here’s a bit more rundown on three casks on offer and what to expect!

Kicking off with Malt of the Month. A bottling each month hand-picked by our Cellarmaster as something that is fun, affordable, sharable and as always unique. For March, we’re looking at Cask 13.59 ‘Apricots in a hessian sack’. Nestled in our Spicy & Sweet category, this is the first cask from distillery 13 we’ve seen in a long time, and from a distillery that is rarely seen in an ex-bourbon barrel. What does that mean exactly? It means you’re going to be able to enjoy a single cask, cask strength, unique expression, which has a certain ‘honesty’ and exciting flavour that will be a delight in the glass with notes of Apricot, fresh ginger, pear skins, chalky sweets and more. If you’ve ever had a chuckle (or recoiled) at the sight of Richard Paterson throwing whisky on the floor from this distillery, then this might just be the cask for you! Reduced for the month of March to just $160.
Of note in March Outturn is our very special Charlie MacLean selection of an Irish whiskey, Cask 51.11 ‘Irish danger juice’. Already featured at some of our incredible Partner Bars around the country and in a chat between Matt Bailey & Andrew Derbidge on YouTube, Irish whiskey is so rarely at cask strength in core range offering, let alone single cask like this. Aged for 15 years in a 1st fill barrel from a remarkably old distillery, this special cask selected by the Chair of our UK Tasting Panel might just be that special dram you open on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March, after it arrives on your doorstep from this Outturn. Expect notes of jelly babies, chocolate wheat biscuits, apple crumble, manuka honey, buttery cereal notes and more.
Lastly for this triple wrap, another new code welcoming back into the stable with Speysider distillery 91. Cask 91.21 ‘Sweet simplicity’ is anything but ‘simple’. A prime example of a whisky where the spirit isn’t overwhelmed with oak in our Young & Spritely category, so you can really dig into the spirit character and story. Routinely used for blends like Bells or single malts like The Singleton, the spirit from 91 is often heavy, nutty, and intriguing. Imagine what 8 years in a refill barrel could do… Expect notes of jelly beans, citrus peel, strawberry candy, tinned pineapple chunks and ideal warm dramming.
The whole March Outturn goes on sale this Friday 1st March 2019 at midday AEDT, only on www.smws.com.au and only to members of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Not a member and keen to join? Need to renew your membership to the best whisky club on earth? Click here.
