DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it’s back! Our favourite and most popular tasting event is back for 2025. And\, this year\, we’re combining it with our annual Gathering!\nThe SMWS Gathering has always been a time of coming together\, a time to embrace the shared love and passion for good whisky amongst friends new and old. It’s a celebration of everything that makes the SMWS truly unique: the whisky\, stories\, experiences\, and most importantly\, the members! \nSo\, how does our “Guess the Whisky” night work\, and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing five of our latest whiskies — some of the latest Outturn\, and some that have never before been seen or released in Australia! As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and — with the benefit of multiple choice\, answer sheets\, and the tasting notes to help you — your team attempts to guess each whisky’s key features and characteristics. \nFor example\, its age\, its ABV (both within ranges — don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its Flavour Profile\, its region\, and — for bonus points — the actual cask code! Each whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. \nIt’s a bit like your local pub trivia night\, only tastier! \nIt’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and — best of all — you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way. SUMMARY:An Evening with Tamdhu
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a small and intimate tasting with the acclaimed international ambassador for Ian Macleod Distillers\, Gordon Dundas\, as we enjoy an evening with Tamdhu.\nTamdhu Distillery is one of the quiet achievers on Speyside but lays claim to being the only distillery in Scotland to fill 100% into sherry casks for its production. Fans of sherried whiskies will not want to miss this! \nRecently elevated to the rank of Master by the Keepers of the Quaich\, Ian has had a storied career in the industry and has long been a friend of the Society. (Members may recall he presented a tasting for us in Sydney back in 2014 when he looked after a different brand.) Currently holidaying in Australia\, Andrew Derbidge has convinced him to take a night out of his leave to give us his wisdom\, insights\, and humour into all things Tamdhu. \nWe’ll be tasting a combined line-up of Tamdhu whiskies from their official stable\, plus several SMWS single cask releases from Distillery 8 that we’ve had express-flown to Sydney just for this event. \nBottled just in the last few months\, these Society casks have not even been released in Europe yet\, so this will be quite the sneak peek! \nPlease note this event is a Members-only exclusive with room for just 20 people. DESCRIPTION:The Scotch Whisky Festivals are a time for celebrating the great uisge beatha (water of life) that we enjoy; to celebrate locally\, we’re bringing our hugely successful afternoon festival back to the Royal Automobile Club of Australia for a second year!\nFor 2025\, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is hosting the Whisky Wanderers festival\, our iteration of the popular Scotch Whisky Festivals in which each Scotch region celebrates their history and flavour. This year\, the SMWS has produced multiple cask-strength expressions to celebrate the Whisky Wanderers festival\, and Australia is receiving 14x of them! All 14 casks will be on pour for this festival hosted in the RACA’s iconic Victoria room. \nTickets include unlimited pours of the 14x new 2025 Whisky Wanderer bottlings\, canapés\, and the option to add on complimentary micro masterclass sessions (hosted in the Pioneers Room). We’ll have several whisky stations set up and guests can visit each to taste the drams on offer\, with canapés roaming during this cocktail-style event. It is\, after all\, Distillery No 1. Ian is a legend of the industry\, he’s a Keeper of the Quaich\, and has worked at Glenfarclas for over 34 years! He’s seen and done it all — initially starting in the warehouse\, then moving into production as a brewer\, then a distiller\, and then working as the Distillery Manager before moving into sales and looking after 30 countries as one of the distillery’s two international Brand Ambassadors. \nHe’s done pretty much everything you can do in the industry\, and has incredible insights into not just the whisky\, but the amazing history and stories behind it all. Join us as we celebrate this incredible distillery — one of the last independent distilleries in Scotland\, still in family hands after 185 years — and enjoy some wonderful Speyside drams (both SMWS and commercial/OB Glenfarclas) while hearing Ian’s wisdom. Now 10 years on\, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary\, we’re inviting our members around the world to come together for our BIGGEST party yet. \n— \nThe Gathering returns to Sydney this September\, but it’s not just the Gathering that’s returning. After an absence of five years\, an old favourite returns: Guess the Whisky!  \nGuess the Whisky was a regular Society event on the Sydney calendar\, held every year or two from 2007 to 2018. So how does it work and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing six of our Gathering whiskies\, but we’ll serve them blind without revealing their order or the cask in question. As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and — with the benefit of multiple choice\, answer sheets\, and our tasting notes to help you — your team attempts to guess each whisky’s key features and characteristics. For example\, you’ll nominate its age and its ABV (both within ranges — don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its region\, and — for bonus points — the actual cask. \nEach whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. It’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and —best of all — you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way.
