This festival is for all our members\, no matter where they are in the world. Along with access to limited-edition single cask whisky\, they can take part in events in person at SMWS Members’ Rooms\, Partner Bars\, venues and online.​​ \nThe origins of The Gathering date back to September 2013 when we celebrated our 30th anniversary with a party. Now 10 years on\, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary\, we’re inviting our members around the world to come together for our BIGGEST party yet. \n— \nThe Gathering returns to Sydney this September\, but it’s not just the Gathering that’s returning. After an absence of five years\, an old favourite returns: Guess the Whisky!  \nGuess the Whisky was a regular Society event on the Sydney calendar\, held every year or two from 2007 to 2018. So how does it work and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing six of our Gathering whiskies\, but we’ll serve them blind without revealing their order or the cask in question. As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and — with the benefit of multiple choice\, answer sheets\, and our tasting notes to help you — your team attempts to guess each whisky’s key features and characteristics. For example\, you’ll nominate its age and its ABV (both within ranges — don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its region\, and — for bonus points — the actual cask. \nEach whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. It’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and —best of all — you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way. DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely delighted to present a Society Distillery Feature night\, focussing on Glenfarclas Distillery where the Society’s roots began with Cask No. 1.1.  Join us for a fun and memorable evening with whisky legend and Society friend\, Ian McWilliam\, Glenfarclas’ Marketing Executive and Keeper of the Quaich. With over two decades of experience at the distillery\, Ian has overseen each part of the production process at Glenfarclas\, having started in the warehouse\, then worked up through mashing\, brewing\, to distilling\, and also as assistant distillery manager before switching to global sales. \nIan will present a wonderful account and virtual tour of the distillery – one of the very last in Scotland to still be privately owned by a family – and will showcase a range of Glenfarclas expressions. We’ll then dovetail these with a number of very special Society bottlings of Glenfarclas\, including a unique SMWS release being flown in especially for this event and which will be a July Outturn pre-release just for the benefit of SMWS members and their guests. Here’s how it works:\n1. Friday 30th November in the Macquarie Room at the Royal Automobile Club\, 89 Macquarie St.\n2. Twelve new Society casks being featured\, many of them never before seen in Sydney (and\, in some cases\, never before showcased in Australia).\n3. The first eight members to place an order on the night will receive a free 30ml official sample bottle of SMWS whisky.\n4. $88 for Members\, Partners & Guests\, $108 for non-members.\n5. Strictly limited to just 88 people.\n6. The format will be our ever-popular “STEPS” style tasting. And\, with the Australian Malt Whisky Tasting Championship coming up later in the year\, what better time to return to this hilarious and entertaining evening? \nSo how does it work and what’s on offer? We’ll be presenting and showcasing five of our latest whiskies – some off the latest Outturn\, and some that have never before been seen or released in Australia. As the whiskies are presented\, each table forms a team and – with the benefit of multiple choice answer sheets and the tasting notes to help you – your team attempts to guess each whisky’s features and characteristics. For example\, its age\, its ABV (both within ranges – don’t worry\, we’re not that precise!)\, its region\, and – for bonus points – the actual cask. Each whisky is a new round\, and we’ll unveil whiskies and scores as we go until we reach the end of the night and the winning table (with the highest aggregate score) takes home the prizes and the glory. \nIt’s surprisingly easy\, it’s fun\, it’s informal\, and – best of all – you’ll enjoy some incredible whiskies along the way.
